Share few of your experiences? – This question immediately helps me judge the kind of issues a candidate has faced in his career and the learning he has had in past. You always need to be cautious of such questions. Keep two things in mind:
1. Relate the issue with some real business scenario.
2. If you are a hard core technical guy then discuss an interesting situation. Never tell him that I got stuck in a code.
Let me give few examples:
Case 1: If you are in a financial industry and people trust you for the analysis that you do: Take an example of a situation where your analysis went bad due the data sources and you need to set the expectation with the client.
Case 2: If you are a technology person and always involved in the writing algorithms and solving the problems: May be the interesting scenario is when you did not get clear requirements and people expect lot of good results. OR may be a good business problem you solved using technology.
Case 3: If you are a fresher: Always discuss from your industry projects. Never say I was stuck in a problem and the faculty did not help me and I became a hero to solve the problem.
I am sure this article will make you think of interviews you have given till date and answers given around such questions.
Always feel good about the place you work. One on the most frequently asked questions “Why Do You Want To Leave Your Company?”
First of all people don’t want to hear anything negative about the present company and nor wants to listen personal rivalry with your boss.In 98% of the interviews that I have taken till date people always say there is no growth or compensation is not good etc ….
Imagine hiring a maid servant who speaks bad about his present owner
you reject immediately. How could you expect us to recruit a person who speaks negative about his present company?
Here is the answer: I work for a great company and have contributed in various ways in the growth of the company. It’s around N years that I have been working with this company and I think it’s a good time that I should explore some new challenges. This is not a very planned move but I think it is worth trying for the opportunity in the company.
If the interviewer cross questions or still ask the question again which I am sure many people do … Tell me the fair reason why you want to leave? Give a smile
Say politely, Sir, my present company is good and I think the same for my next company either
.
Be dedicated and always feel good about the place where you work.

My Role - In The Company
Flight got delayed by 2.5 hours. Waiting at the airport to board the flight to Bangalore. Good time to write something for my students.
Let me first differentiate between what you really do in the company and how do you project yourself are two different things. Lets take a small example: A sweeper went for an interview in the US embassy for a job. Interviewer asked a simple question – Tell me something about your role in the company where you work.
Poor sweeper was honest and said I am a sweeper. Great person, but needs to communicate a little more and needs to relate his job with business.
If I would have been at his place there would be a little different answer
.
I manage and own the cleanliness work in my company. I sweep the floor and make sure that stuff used in cleaning the floor is good and medicated. I also handle cleanliness related activities during functions and parties. So i have good exposure to maintain standards even if the foot fall is very high
.
So folks if you are going for a technology interview as a fresher\experienced prepare your answer well. Let me make a framework for your answer:
Start : I have the ownership/responsibility of a feature in every release. Ownership always means development followed by testing and then validated as per requirements. So i am involved in every phase.
The work in our company demands us to understand the business and the technology so I am a person who liked to work in technology keeping business perspective in mind.
[Now say something very specific to your role] I have been involved in testing\development related activity of UI [or backend] work. I have also been involved in bug fixing and make even the last moment changes as per the business needs.
End the answer with a smile
.
This may be little too much for a fresher. I will frame a little different and simple answer for freshers.

Its been more then 5 years that I have been training students to get there first job in the technology.
More than 90% of students who go for the interviews are not aware about the quality of the answers they give. When they come back from the interview and someone ask them for the results the answer is “I did well but I was rejected in the last round”
.
I will be writing few blogs every week for those students who want to crack their very first interview.
Here are few of the questions that I would recommend for every fresher/experienced candidate should prepare before they appear for the interview:
Q-1 – Tell me something about yourself?
Q-2 – What was your role in your previous company?
Q-3 – Tell me the project on which you have worked?
Q-4 – Can you share few of you experiences where you have learned new things in your previous job?
Q-5 – How often do you interact with other teams?
These are the most frequently asked question in any interview. Besides, everyone knows that interviewer would ask these questions but we do not prepare for these questions.
In my new posts I will be making a framework for these answers that would fit most of the candidate profiles.
In my next post you can watch for the answers of the questions that I mentioned.
